Best Friends Hockey Club is Sam Pura’s skate sharpening shop in Livermore and Fremont, California, and a club that gives hockey teams their own pages and apps. This page says what we keep, why, who sees it, and how to make it go away. Short version: we use your info to sharpen your skates, run your team’s page if your team uses one, and keep you posted, and we never sell it.
What we keep
- You: your name, mobile number and (if you give it) email.
- Your skaters: names, and the details a sharpener needs: age, height, weight, skating level, position, team, and how each pair is sharpened. Parents give this for kids.
- Your bookings: drop-off or visit days, places you ask Sam to meet you, amounts, whether you’ve paid, and messages between you and Sam.
- Drop-off photos you take of your skates, so Sam can tell the pairs apart.
- Rewards: pairs sharpened, free pairs, and friends you invited.
How we use it
To book and sharpen your skates, tell you where things stand, take payment, give you your rewards, remind you when you’re due, run your team’s page and app if your team uses them, and, only if you ask, put you on the club’s free agents list or a team’s list of players who’d like to play. That’s it. Signing up to play never signs you up for sharpening reminders, and the other way around.
Text messages
If you check “Text me updates about my skates, and a sharpening reminder every 3.8 weeks”, we text your mobile number about your bookings: confirmations, when your skates are collected and ready, payment, and reminders when you’re due for a sharpen. Message frequency varies with your bookings, usually a few texts per visit. Message and data rates may apply.
Reply STOP to any text to stop them, or HELP for help. You can also turn texts off in your Skate Locker under My info. Texting is never required to book.
We don’t share your mobile number or texting consent with anyone for their marketing.
Sam may also text you himself from his own phone about your skates, the way he always has.
Notifications
If you add your Skate Locker to your Home Screen and turn on notifications, your phone shows our updates. Turn them off any time in your Skate Locker or your phone’s settings.
Sharpening reminders
About 3.8 weeks after your last sharpening (or after you join, if you haven’t had one yet), we post a short “time for fresh edges” reminder in your Skate Locker, and send it as a notification or text if you turned those on. To stop them, tap Stop reminders under the reminder, or turn off Sharpening reminders in your Skate Locker under My info, Notifications & texts. Or just text Sam.
The club’s free agents list
If you tap Join the free agents (on the club’s teams page, after you join, or in your Skate Locker), your name, mobile number and what you play (and the nights and note you add on the teams page) go on the club’s free agents list. The captains of the club’s teams and Sam see all of it, so a captain can text you when their team is short. Other free agents see only your first name, last initial, what you play and your nights, inside the free agent app. Never your number.
You also get your own free agent app: a private link to the games our teams need players for, the teams looking for players, and a chat with the other free agents. What you write in that chat, the other free agents and Sam can read. The list is for players 18 and older. To come off it, tap Take me off the list on the club’s teams page (bestfriendshockeyclub.com/league) from the phone you signed up on, or text Sam at (510) 449-3687.
Team pages and team apps
The public team page shows the team’s captains and managers, its regular skaters and its starting goalie: name, number, spot and role. Spares and subs aren’t listed. It never shows a phone number, an email, a note or a rating. Don’t want to be listed, or want your number taken off? Ask your captain or text Sam.
Your team app opens with your own private link: an invitation that works once, or a sign-in your captain checks. Each phone gets its own key, and your captain or Sam can take a phone off. Teammates see the roster: names, numbers and spots. Never your phone number.
Your team’s admins (the captains and managers your team names, and Sam) see more, to run the team: the roster with mobile numbers, what you tell the app about how you play (spots, how flexible you are, what you’d like to work on, and any ratings you give yourself, which only help build fair lines), your answer about next season and any offer they send you, what you owe for dues if they plan dues here, and any private notes they keep. Private notes and self-ratings never reach a teammate or a public page.
Play with us on a team page: your name, mobile, what you play and your note go to that team’s captains and Sam, so they can text you. Pick Any club team and you go on the club’s free agents list instead (below).
Team dues: BFHC never takes team dues. Your captain sets them and says where to pay (in BenchApp, or the way your captain chooses). What you owe shows only to you and your team’s admins.
How long: a team’s records stay while the team uses the site, and past seasons stay as history for its captains. Ask your captain or text Sam to have yours removed.
Playing BFHC Hockey online
When you play a friend online in BFHC Hockey, your two browsers connect straight to each other, so each one sees the other’s internet address (that’s how a direct connection works). To find each other, each browser leaves a short note on our site under the game’s code, with that address in it. We delete the note as soon as your friend’s game picks it up; a note nobody picks up stops working after 15 minutes and is cleared out after that. To learn its own public address, your browser also asks Cloudflare and Google. The game itself goes straight between the two of you: we don’t see it, record it or keep a score.
Payments
Card and Apple Pay payments go through Square. We never see or keep your card number. Venmo and Zelle payments go through those apps.
Who else touches it
Only the services that run the shop, each for its own job, plus your own team’s admins for your team’s app, and the club’s team captains (and, in part, the other free agents) for the free agents list if you join it: Netlify (hosting the site and storing your locker), Square (card payments), Twilio (sending texts), Google (Sam’s calendar for bookings and sign-in to his own admin), and the push services built into your phone (notifications). We don’t sell or rent your information to anyone.
Our homepage and a few public pages use a Google Ads tag to see whether ads lead to bookings. Your private Skate Locker never has it.
Your Skate Locker link
Your locker opens with a private link instead of a password. Anyone with that link can see your locker, so share it only with family. Lost it, or think someone else has it? Text Sam and he’ll help.
Changing or deleting it
Edit your info and skaters any time in your Skate Locker. Want everything deleted? Text Sam at (510) 449-3687 and he’ll remove your locker, skaters, photos and history.
